Fabio Vieira looks set to rejoin his former club Porto on a season-long loan.

Vieira arrived from the Portuguese side back in July 2022 for a fee of £34million and has made 49 appearances for the Gunners in this time.

The attacking midfielder became a fan favourite in his first season in North London as he acted as a super sub during Arsenal’s 2022/23 title challenge, making 22 appearances with only 3 starts.

Vieira contributed a goal and two assists in his first season, however, he found minutes harder to come by in his second season, playing only 11 times last term.

Despite replicating his goal involvements in 2023/24, one goal and two assists, the Portuguese struggled to get into Mikel Arteta’s side ahead of the likes of Odegaard, Havertz, and the recently departed Emile Smith Rowe.

The 24-year-old saw his minutes almost halved from his first season to his second, partly due to a groin injury he picked up in November 2023 which saw him sidelined for 3 months.

According to The Athletics’ David Ornstein, Porto have agreed a deal to re-sign Vieira on loan as he searches for regular football.

The imminent arrival of Euro 2024 winner Mikel Merino, along with the rise of 17-year-old, academy product, Ethan Nwaneri indicates that Vieira’s game time would have been further reduced this season.

The minute-seeking midfielder will be hopeful he can rediscover his best form and a regular place in the starting eleven as he prepares to return to his previous club.

Vieira joined Porto in 2008 and rose through the ranks at the academy, he appeared 28 times for Porto B and 76 times for the first team, scoring 10 goals in this time.

Whilst in Portugal, he was crowned champion twice in 2019/20 and 2021/22 and also lifted the Portuguese Cup in 2022.

Despite this, he has found it difficult to fit into the Gunners’ system amongst a competitive central midfield and an array of excellent wide players.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be optimistic that Vieira can emulate his success at Porto for a second time and bring that back to the Emirates at the conclusion of his loan spell.

Is this a good move for Fabio Vieira and a smart decision for Arsenal? Could the loan move help him establish a permanent position in the Gunners 2025/26 squad? Regardless, Arsenal fans will wish him the best for the upcoming campaign.
