Gabriel Martinelli is expected to miss Arsenal’s Champions League match against FC Porto on Tuesday due to a foot injury, according to The Athletic.

The Brazilian forward needed to be helped off the field during the Gunners’ 6-0 thumping of bottom-placed side Sheffield United last Monday, picking up a problem following a challenge shortly after the hour-mark which caused him to struggle to walk by himself.

Martinelli, who has contributed eight goals and five assists in 32 appearances this season, subsequently missed last weekend’s narrow 2-1 win over Brentford as well as training on Monday ahead of what is a crucial Round of 16 tie, with his potential absence being a huge blow for Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard however refused to rule him out completely, despite the 22-year-old being seen on crutches at the Emirates Stadium on the weekend after Arteta had previously claimed that he was “pretty positive” about the forward.

The Gunners will therefore have to bode without their star boy for Tuesday’s Champions League match, with Arsenal coming into it with a slight disadvantage after Galeno’s last gasp winner in the first leg which saw the Portuguese side come out with a narrow victory last month. The onus will be on the likes of Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard to create the spark Arsenal’s frontline need on Tuesday, along with Leandro Trossard being Martinelli’s likely replacement after the Belgian took his place in the team on Saturday.

Due to the injury, Martinelli will not make Brazil’s squad for their international friendlies against England and Spain later this month.
