Arsenal secured a statement victory against top-four rivals Aston Villa yesterday afternoon. We review the main takeouts from the Gunners’ first 2024/25 away day.
The title chase is now
The pursuit of Manchester City needs to start in the early stages of a new season, given the quality and consistency of Pep Guardiola’s champions. Experience of the chase counts, and the Gunners are already showcasing maturity and intelligence to prevent City from pulling away in the first few matches.
Raya shines bright
Following last week’s excellent stop against Wolves, David Raya probably saved his team from defeat at 0-0 with a miraculous save from an Ollie Watkins header. One measure of world-class status for goalkeepers is whether they can “save the unsavable.” Oh yes, David can!
Ring-rusty Thomas
The expected arrival of accomplished midfielder Mikel Merino casts doubt on whether Thomas Partey will remain a definite starter. After a full pre-season, the Ghanaian still lacks his old sharpness and speed. Hopefully, these attributes will return, but moving forward, Partey looks increasingly set for a squad rotation role.
Trossard: a maturing vintage
Leandro Trossard continues to impress with his ruthless finishing, scoring a beautifully taken goal with his first touch off the bench. Approaching 30 this year, the Belgian winger’s game continues to evolve, honing some irresistible wide play and end product. Must start against his alma mater Brighton next week.
Season-defining transfer window?
This campaign’s outcomes may well rest on the transfer business done in the next few days. Merino aside, two key areas up front need urgent attention: cover for Bukayo Saka/a new fast wide option, and given Jesus’s injury record, another centre-forward.
