Arsenal blew away the disappointments of the past few days with a fantastic Saturday night victory at Wolves. We look at the big talking points.
A massive win
The obituaries were being prepped for Arsenal’s 2023/24 season following the defeats against Aston Villa and Bayern Munich last week. Arsenal showed they have big bouncebackability—the team displayed awesome character and spirit to take three vital points in the title race.
The preferred XI
Mikel Arteta faced arguably the most important team selection decisions of the campaign for this Molineux showdown. Managers look at their squad critically at these moments and ask the question, who can I trust? Arteta was vindicated with his choices – expect this starting team to play in most of the run-in.
Raya’s big save
At 0-0 on the half-hour mark, Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes stole the ball off Jakub Kiwior on the right and drove into the box, blasting a powerful shot towards the left corner of David Raya’s net. Raya pulled off his save of the season as he pushed the point-blank effort onto the post to preserve a club Premier League record sixth consecutive clean sheet.
Watch the goal gap
Currently, Arsenal’s goal difference is seven ahead of Manchester City. This is an important statistic, as it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Premier League will be decided on the metric. Any opportunities to increase the gap must be taken in the final matches.
Chelsea up next
Just before kick-off, Chelsea was knocked out of the FA Cup at Wembley. Maybe this is a bonus for Arsenal, as the Blues have nothing left to play for. Nevertheless, every match at this stage is difficult, and another top performance is required from the Gunners on Tuesday night.
