A lackluster performance in Munich last night saw Arsenal knocked out of the Champions League at the Quarter Final stage. We look at the big talking points.
An awful four days
On the back of the Aston Villa defeat on Sunday, this loss felt like a hammer blow to Arsenal’s confidence and prospects of success. The Gunners offered very little attacking-wise for the entire game, limping out of the competition without a fight.
Opportunity missed
Bayern Munich is a European powerhouse, and it was never going to be easy to overcome them, but this iteration of the former UCL champions is not great. A team with Eric Dier as chief defensive lynchpin could have been beaten by a high-performing Arsenal.
Tired legs, tired minds
Unfortunately, the pattern of play on Sunday against Aston Villa was repeated. A focused first half could not be replicated after the break due to physical and mental fatigue. Overuse of key players and a general lack of squad rotation are biting down hard at this critical juncture of the season.
No plan B
The Gunners have enjoyed an impressive run in 2024, but the free-scoring festival of a few weeks ago was bound to end, with tougher contests ahead. At Bayern, when Arsenal needed a different attacking approach in the last quarter, Mikel Arteta didn’t possess a fresh tactical option to threaten the opposition.
Win or bust at Wolves
Arteta must raise spirits quickly and be ruthless with team selection on the weekend. Stop playing the fatigued or any walking-wounded. The Wolves equation is simple: win, or the Gunners face a trophyless campaign.
