Arsenal successfully navigated a thrilling derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, driving the title race into the last three weeks of the season. We look at all the main talking points.
North London service resumes
Arsenal’s late Wenger-era demise coincided with what the popular sports media explained was a “power shift” towards Tottenham. Our oldest rivals looked on the cusp of achieving great things domestically and in the Champions League. Alas, the shift never transpired, and a few years later, the Gunners have reemerged into their familiar position as North London’s finest.
NLD history makers
This vibrant Arsenal team continues to create their own history: for the first time in the Premier League era, the Gunners beat Tottenham away in consecutive league encounters. In addition, Bukayo Saka scored in both home and away North London league derbies in the same season, a considerable feat last achieved by Ian Wright three decades ago.
Arteta’s maturing tactics
Mikel Arteta is proving he can outmanoeuvre the most experienced coaches in the game. Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, and Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t get the better of the young Spaniard this year -and neither could Ange Postecoglou yesterday. Arteta ruthlessly exploited Tottenham’s weaknesses as Arsenal broke quickly out of the Spurs high-press and repeatedly exposed their opponent’s defensive naivety.
Jover’s masterclass
One of the game’s most influential figures was Arsenal set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, whose meticulous preparation is drawing praise across the football community. The Gunners have already accumulated 22 goals this season from set-pieces, with a miserly six conceded. Jover’s instructions at corners worked a treat at Tottenham – beautiful inswingers from Saka and Declan Rice, coupled with clever movement in the box produced two of the three goals.
Three to go
Arsenal now faces Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Everton, knowing that only a perfect trio of results can give them any chance of winning the Premier League. Manchester City must drop points in their remaining four fixtures to let in the Gunners. City’s toughest likely test is Tottenham away in their penultimate game. The good news for Arsenal fans is that Spurs need to keep winning in order to have any hope of a top-four finish.
