Bringing you all the injury updates before Arsenal’s matchup with Luton Town, as Arteta looks to regain the top spot of the Premier League ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Sheffield United on Thursday night.
Many people were unsure of how long Bukayo Saka’s absence would go after he withdrew from the England team during the international break.
Fortunately, Saka made his comeback for the Gunners in a goalless draw with Manchester City. Even though he kicked off the game, he would only play for 78 of the 90 minutes and was given some light treatment from the physios.
When asked if Saka was available, Arteta responded promptly: “He’s fine. Obviously, we haven’t trained, we’ve only recovered and have a short live session today to prepare for the game, and we’ll see whether he’s in the best condition to start or not.”
In the end, Gabriel Martinelli—who had been out of action for nearly a month due to an injury he incurred against Sheffield United, the bottom-dwelling team—replaced Arsenal’s star man.
When questioned if Martinelli was in contention, Arteta replied: “He is because he was available to play against a really tough opponent three days ago. Again, we’ll train today and see the state of every player and make the right decision tomorrow.”
The only other injury issue remains with Jurrien Timber, who has missed a significant amount of the season due to injuries. Having only registered one appearance for the whole of this season so far – against Nottingham Forrest on the opening day.
Although Mikel Arteta was quick to clarify that the Timber may initially play for the Under 21s in order to accrue crucial minutes and make sure he is more than capable of intensity, so it appears like the Dutch defender is very close to making a comeback.
As reiterated by: “He’s doing very well, he’s back training,” Mikel revealed. “He’s not far off, but the thing is that last step, he hasn’t played any minutes so does he need a game with the under-21s, does he need two games?
Arteta further added: “We are going to have to see, especially because he’s training with us and we need to see how long that will take him. That last part is tricky and sometimes takes a while. Hopefully, he’ll be back as soon as possible.”
With nine crucial games left till the end of the season, Arsenal will undoubtedly need as many bodies as possible surrounding the camp. They are currently in the running for first place, although they are now two points behind Liverpool, who are currently leading the way. Thus, any serious injury could ruin their chances of winning the illustrious title for first time in 20 years.
