Successive defeats against Bayern Munich and Aston Villa has seen Arsenal’s Champions League run ended, while their other chance at silverware has taken a slight blow with the Gunners now relying on the Cityzens to slip up in order to restore their hopes. Mikel Arteta’s side are now beginning to look ahead to next season as they look to strengthen their squad further, and are reportedly targeting a striker and a winger ahead of the summer transfer window.
With six games to go in the Premier League season, it is uncertain if Arsenal will be able to win their first Premier League title since 2004, and could very well finish as runners-up for the second season in a row. This has come from a drastic improvement over the last couple of seasons though, with the arrivals of the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurriën Timber seeing the Gunners strengthen in a number of important areas.
However, there are still some other positions that could use reinforcements, particularly in the forward areas with their highest scorer this season being winger Bukayo Saka, who has netted 14 times in the Premier League, ranking him tenth in the division’s scoring charts. High-scoring strikers are always in demand though, and could be the next step in becoming a title-winning side.
According to the Guardian, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is one of their primary targets and could cost about £100m from their Premier League rivals. The Sweden international was heavily scouted by Arsenal before his move to St James’ Park in August 2022 for an initial £63m, but could be on the move again just two years later with the Gunners supposedly showing genuine interest. In addition, Arsenal have also been heavily linked with Isak’s Sweden teammate Viktor Gyökeres, who has scored 36 goals this season in the Primera Liga for Sporting CP after joining from Championship side Coventry City last year. The 25-year-old has an £86m buyout clause and could make the step up from England’s second tier just a year after last featuring in English football. Furthermore, Juventus and Serbia striker Dušan Vlahović could be another alternative, and it is more likely that one of the three aforementioned strikers will be on the way to the Emirates Stadium after Arsenal’s interest is believed to have cooled on Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
In addition, Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise is understood to be another potential target after impressing Arsenal’s scouting department, despite making only nine Premier League starts this campaign due to an ongoing injury. The France Under-21 international signed a new four-year contract in August after turning down Chelsea, with his current deal including a release clause that comes into effect in the summer, understood to be in the region of £65m. The former Reading man is also being heavily tracked by Manchester City and Manchester United among others though, and could take some convincing to move to North London rather than elsewhere.
