It’s no real secret that Arsenal are in the market for a proven goalscorer, and the hunt for one will likely be their main business in this summer’s transfer market.
Although the Gunners have been banging in the goals of late and they remain fully in the transfer race, there have been games during the course of the 2023/24 season that the North Londoners could’ve won much easier had they had a true centre-forward in situ.
The names of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney have consistently come up in dispatches, however, it’s another front man that Arsenal have already scouted multiple times.
Arsenal want proven hit-man for next season
One could even say he’s a Championship-level striker given that he was at Coventry City only last season.
Viktor Gyokeres has been hitting the net on a regular basis for Sporting this season – 28 goals in 32 games per WhoScored – and that has clearly piqued the Gunners interest.
“Although there are many clubs that are attentive to Viktor Gyokeres at the moment, none have made a move as yet, nothing is happening now. It’s one for the summer,” Fabrizio Romano said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive Daily Briefing.
“His conditions are that he has a €100m release clause then we will see what happens in the summer – but we know how difficult is to negotiate with Portuguese clubs.
“Many clubs have also sent their scouts to watch him, Arsenal for sure multiple times – but also others are closely monitoring the situation.”
If Arsenal intend to firm up their interest, any negotiation on price is likely to be the kicker for whether the club finally decide upon Gyokeres or concentrate their efforts elsewhere.
It’s a decision that Edu and the club must get exactly right because they simply can’t afford to waste such an amount on one player.
Their due diligence on recent transfers would suggest that they know just what they’re looking for, and time will show us whether that’s the 25-year-old or not.
