Arsenal is set to bid farewell to Vivianne Miedema as the club has confirmed the 27-year-old’s exit from the club at the end of the season.
Since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2017, the forward has been nothing short of prolific for the Gunners. In 172 appearances, she’s netted an impressive 125 goals and provided her teammates with another 50 assists as she took the top spot as the Super League’s all-time leading scorer. Her impact on Arsenal goes beyond her personal achievements, as she played a vital role in their triumphant title campaign back in 2018/19, with 32 goal contributions in just 20 games.
The past couple of seasons has seen the Netherlands international face set-backs, after being sidelined for a grueling 10 months due to an ACL injury and then returning to the pitch back in October. Since then, she has only made 8 league appearances scoring 1 goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory to Liverpool in January.
As Jonas Eidvall looks to develop his squad in the summer, and Miedema seeking a new chapter, the decision for her to leave appears to be a mutual one.
As Sky Sports News reporter Anton Toloui states, rivals Manchester City seem to be the likely next step for Arsenal’s number 11. He said “It would be a seismic move from the team that is competing and so close to potentially breaking their WSL title barren run. They really want that title and they want to go over the edge and pull away from the other clubs. Miedema is a player that can potentially help them do that.”
However, he also confirmed that City are yet to contact the player as they are unable to “talk with another English club until there is one month left on your deal” and Miedema’s contract ends at the end of June.
Clare Wheately, Director of Women’s football at Arsenal, commented on the exit news as she acknowledged that “since joining us in 2017, Viv has taken on a special place in the hearts of our supporters, who I’m sure will have many fond memories of her time at Arsenal. Viv leaves with our best wishes for the future, after seven memorable years here.”
Miedema thanked the fans and her fellow teammates via a message shared by the player on social media saying, “For now it’s time to move on. My time at Arsenal will be forever with me and I’m grateful for all the special memories.”
