Arsenal remain in contention for the title, taking three points in a comfortable home win against Bournemouth. We look at the key talking points.
Just keep winning
Mikel Arteta repeatedly states in interviews that all his team can do in the title race is focus on themselves because Arsenal cannot control events outside their influence. The Gunners’ chances of lifting the Premier League are narrowing with each Manchester City victory, but they must keep the pressure on by winning.
Tactics: Arteta v Wenger
For all Arsene Wenger’s achievements, one of the Frenchmen’s weaknesses was a stubbornness to adapt to his opponent’s tactical plans. The Spaniard is perfecting a more sophisticated approach. Like many away teams this season, Bournemouth enjoyed much possession at the Emirates, but the Gunners are beautifully drilled to drop into shape when required, ultimately controlling and dominating the match.
Half-price Rice
Declan Rice can consider himself unlucky as the runner-up to Phil Foden for the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year. Rice’s contribution has been nothing short of transformational for Arsenal this season. The midfielder’s performance yesterday showcased his outstanding features – tireless box-to-box athleticism, a perfect assist for Trossard, and a superb goal to cap another great day’s graft.
We need Gabriel Jesus
Media speculation has been rife surrounding the apparent departure of Jesus this summer. Arteta shut down the rumours on Friday, saying: “I don’t know where this is coming from.” The manager is a huge admirer of the Brazilian forward, who provided a wonderful cameo late on, taking on defenders on the edge of the box with characteristic panache before providing a fantastic assist for Rice’s goal.
United up next
Arsenal’s Premier League record at Manchester United has been poor over the past twenty-odd years. The Gunners have registered only two wins in their last twenty-one encounters at Old Trafford, one of which was in the untypical no-crowd COVID season. Although United will have one eye on the FA Cup final, the fixture still presents a massive test against one of our biggest traditional rivals.
