Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has been the subject of many conversations regarding his future at Arsenal after his Man of the Match performance against Liverpool.

The Gunners signed the experienced 32-year-old from Chelsea in the 2023 January transfer window for just ten million pounds. With his success and leadership at Chelsea, winning both the Europa and Champions League trophies, Mikel Arteta knew he was getting a reliable player and someone with a winning mentality.

With his contract expiring this summer, many Arsenal fans are wondering whether Arsenal are going to trigger the option to extend his deal by a year, or whether they will let him move on.

Ever since his move to North London, he has created some significant moments in an Arsenal shirt and has become a reliable and consistent player under Mikel Arteta.

A moment that Arsenal fans will remember forever is his late goal away at Villa Park in February 2023 when Arsenal beat Aston Villa 4-2. In a period where Arsenal was fighting for the Premier League, Jorginho was responsible for a goal that secured crucial points for the Gunners.

In a more recent fixture, Jorginho was entrusted by Mikel Arteta as Arsenal took on the league leaders Liverpool, in what was a must-win game. His leadership was shown on the pitch as he dictated the midfield play and allowed Rice and Odegaard to shine alongside him.

With Thomas Partey’s extended absence, Jorginho has been essential for Arsenal’s midfield depth this season. He has proven his quality in games with the highest stakes, such as Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City in October 2023.

His maturity and intelligence are so important both on the pitch and off it, and he is a role model for this young Arsenal side.

Declan Rice spoke after the victory against Liverpool, on how Jorginho is a player he looks up to and how the prospect of playing alongside him at Arsenal was extremely desirable and a factor that he considered before his move.

As well as Partey’s injury problems over the last year, Granit Xhaka’s exit from the club in the summer of 2023, meant that Arsenal were going to lose one of their most influential players of the 22/23 season.

Jorginho offers a great deal to be admired by this Arsenal team. With the absence of Thomas Partey, he provides a degree of midfield stability and strength. With the loss of Granit Xhaka, the ability to provide some much-required creativity to the midfield.

At his age, he is no doubt a role model for this young arsenal team and demonstrates his quality whenever he steps on the pitch, whether for 90 minutes or just a ten-minute cameo.

With his experience and success in other competitions, such as the Europa League, Champions League and Euros, I’m sure he is very keen on adding the Premier League to his list of achievements, with Arsenal being a side he could potentially achieve that with.

The only question left to ask is whether Arteta can guarantee Jorginho the minutes that he so rightfully deserves, as no doubt a midfield reinforcement will be high up on the agenda in the Summer transfer window. If it were up to me, it would be a no-brainer to renew him for one more year with the range of qualities he brings to this side.
