Mikel Arteta said after the game, “We had to put right the last two results against them,” and that is exactly what his side did!
Ex-West Ham player Declan Rice showed why he is worth £100 million, with one goal and two assists to round off the afternoon, as well as Bukayo Saka scoring a brace, including a penalty.
Arsenal’s main threat this season has been from set pieces, and it was none other than Saliba and Gabriel who headed the ball into the back of the net, both from a Rice cross.
In the first 20 minutes, Arsenal were very wasteful, with Saka and Trossard coming close to opening the scoresheet. Some fans, including myself, would have thought it would be one of those games where nothing quite works!
Once the first goal was scored by Saliba, Arsenal scored three other goals in 15 minutes, putting the game to bed before the second half got underway.
Saka fired home from the penalty spot after Areola took the Arsenal man out as he tried to skip past the keeper. Gabriel headed in for the third goal, with Trossard scoring a beauty just before the half-time whistle blew.
It seemed as if the home fans were leaving the stadium to go and get their halftime snacks, but it turned out that thousands of their supporters left the stadium at halftime.
With a smaller crowd than before, Arsenal started the second half as the better team again, and Saka scored his second goal of the game, wrongfooting Areola and finding the bottom right-hand corner with ease.
Arsenal carried on attacking, and Saka admitted after the game that Arsenal “smelt blood”! The Gunners sixth and final goal came from Declan Rice, who scored an absolute worldie against his former side but chose not to celebrate out of respect for the fans, although he was booed all game.
It was good to see Nwaneri get some minutes in his second Premier League appearance for Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta will be happy that he could take Rice, Saka, and Trossard off with just under half an hour of the game left to be played.
Arsenal remain in third place, level on points with Manchester City and two points off the top spot. The Gunners travel to Turf Moor next Saturday to face Burnley, who have gone seven games without a win in all competitions.
If Arsenal play as they did today, with the likes of Tomiyasu and Jesus returning to the squad, surely the game can only go one way…
