Arsenal has been heavily linked with a striker for this summer, and although there are a few names on the Gunners list, the club still has not decided what they want to do in the position, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Mikel Arteta’s side has been linked with Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres for months, and recently reports from Portugal have reported the deal for the 26-year-old is close, but that’s not true according to Romano.

Romano was speaking on The Debrief Podcast (on Substack) about the Gunners and Gyökeres.

Romano said: “In the last 24, 48 hours, we had some rumours about a deal being ‘close’ being ‘very advanced’, I also saw something from Portugal that it’s ‘almost completed’, I’m told this is not true.

“At the moment, Arsenal are not at the advanced stages of their negotiations for Viktor Gyökeres. They made contact on the players’ side already months ago, between April and May, so they’re informed of the conditions of the release clause, but also the cost of the deal in terms of salary, and all the rest.

“Arsenal are informed of the situation for Viktor Gyökeres, but at the moment they still haven’t decided what they really want to do in that position and who is their priority target, they want to take their time to assess the options.

“So at the moment with Gyökeres, it’s not something imminent or close, it’s an option, it’s a concrete possibility for Arsenal in case they decide to go for that kind of player. I don’t think Arsenal will go for crazy money, so has to be maybe a different structure of the deal, or Arsenal could look at different possibilities.”
