According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori is getting increasingly closer to joining Arsenal in a €50 million deal.
Fabrizio Romano reported on his YouTube channel that Arsenal are leading the race for the 22-year-olds signature, with London rivals Chelsea also in the mix for the Italian international.
Romano said: “Arsenal [are ahead of Chelsea for Calafiori] because Arsenal have presented their proposal, long term deal, the salary is not an issue at all because Calafiori is on a normal salary at Bologna so there is not going to be a problem.
“Arsenal also presented their project to the player and the player is open to joining Arsenal incase they can reach an agreement with Bologna. So there is already a green light Calafiori to Arsenal.
“What about Chelsea? Chelsea are prepared to approach Bologna trying to include players also in the negotiation. So let’s see what’s going to happen, it’s a different kind of strategy, but for sure, Chelsea are still there, but Arsenal are the favourites in this moment.”
Romano added Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has approved Calafiori and is keen on bringing the player to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
“Mikel Arteta already approved the player and is a big fan of Calafiori and keen on bringing him to the club.
“Arsenal have a shortlist with three names for that position: a left footed talented defender, playing as a left back, playing as a centre back. Calafiori is exactly what Arsenal need in that position, and what Arsenal want to bring in in the summer transfer window.
“Now waiting for the next steps, something between Arsenal and Bologna, this is the crucial step, this is the crucial point. For sure Calafiori gives his green light to Arsenal because he also knows that Juventus are almost no longer in the race. Juventus are considered out.”
